Coolie Heading Towards Lokesh Kanagaraj’s First Flop?

Lokesh Kanagaraj has built a separate fanbase for himself with films like Kaithi, Master, Vikram, and Leo. The viewers like his unique style in action sequences and hero elevations. However, Coolie, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s latest film, is in danger of becoming his first flop.

Everyone was so excited about the combination of Superstar Rajinikanth and Lokesh when Coolie was announced. As expected, the film created a huge anticipation among audiences. But after release, all were disappointed with the weak content in the film.

After collecting a record-breaking 380 Cr gross the 1st weekend, Rajinikanth’s Coolie sees a big drop today. The film’s collections seem to be less than 20 Cr gross worldwide, and if the night shows do not pick up or even go lower, it will be a sign of the upcoming trend.

If the action drama continues the same trend from tomorrow, then achieving the 500 Cr mark is also very tough.

The breakeven is at the 600 Cr mark, and as said above, if Coolie does not pick up, it will be Lokesh Kangaraj’s first box office failure.

One of the main reasons for the massive craze among audiences for Coolie is Nagarjuna doing the antagonist role. The expectations were high for his character, and everyone was disappointed after seeing the film. However, surprisingly, Simon is trending on the internet.

Telugu audiences expected it to be a tug-of-war between Simon and Deva in the film. While Lokesh Kangaraj presented the character with a lot of swag and stylish presence, he gave the characterization a regular one, which disappointed the fans.

Nagarjuna is one of the biggest superstars in Tollywood, and no one wants to see him in regular villain roles. But Simon’s character works well in Tamil and Hindi. 

Nagarjuna’s Simon videos are trending viral on the internet, and especially the swag and screen presence are winning huge appreciations. Especially Tamil audiences are doing multiple edits with the Soniya Soniya song with Nag’s shots from Coolie.

This will be a relief for Nagarjuna as well, but he definitely needs to take the feedback seriously and has to do big roles to satisfy Telugu audiences as well.

Dunki–Salaar Clash Outshines Coolie–War 2 Battle

The box office clash between Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Hrithik Roshan-NTR’s War 2 was the most hyped one for Indian cinema. Sadly, both films did not reach the expectations. The Coolie-War 2 battle gets overshadowed by the Dunki-Salaar Clash.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki and Prabhas’s Salaar clashed in December 2023. The competition impacted both films. However, both films might not have seen the blockbuster result; they also did not end with poor results. 

Salaar received much wider reception after its OTT release, and many consider it their favorite and most repeated movie in recent years.

Also, Prabhas and Prashanth Neel’s action drama saw decent numbers at the box office with 600 Cr gross collections. SRK’s Dunki is not as big as Pathaan and Jawan, but it was the 3rd biggest grosser for the actor with over 460 Cr gross. 

Both movies combined did over 1000 Cr gross at the worldwide box office. The same was expected from the clash of the War sequel and Coolie, and it was expected to dominate the above-mentioned clash.

The pre-release expectations are that both films had a chance to do 1000 Cr. But both movies disappoint the audiences. While Rajinikanth’s film manages to have a good weekend, War 2 falls on the weekend itself.

Both movies are seeing poor trends today, and now even with both movies combined, there is no possibility of doing 1000 Cr.

The Coolie-War 2 clash fails to surpass the Dunki-Salaar clash, and looking at the box office trend, both movies combined grossing 900 Cr is itself a tough task.

From pre-sales to opening day and opening weekend, there was high competition between Vijay’s Leo and Rajnikath’s Coolie because both are directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. However, Rajini scores a 25 Cr lead in 4 days in the Coolie vs. Leo comparison.

Both of the films have been released with massive hype, and they have the music composed by Anirudh, which is one of the crucial factors in bringing the buzz among audiences. 

Rajinikanth’s Coolie Leads Over Vijay’s Leo on the Opening Weekend

On opening day, Coolie broke Leo’s opening by a 5Cr+ margin and emerged as the biggest Kollywood opener, but WOM and reviews of Rajinikanth-Lokesh’s movie are much poorer than Vijay and Lokesh’s.

Everyone expected Coolie could not match Leo’s collections on the weekend. But on a surprising note, Rajini’s Coolie holds really well in its 1st weekend and even leads Leo by a 25 Cr+ margin. Leo’s 4-day gross is 357 Cr, whereas Coolie’s 4-day gross is 380 Cr.

But on Monday the movie is not holding as strong as Leo; Leo collected nearly 600 Cr gross in the full run. For Coolie, achieving the 500 Cr mark is itself a tough task, and it needs a decent number of people during weekdays to do so.

Coolie vs War 2: Telugu States Area-Wise Box Office Breakdown

Coolie and War 2 released on 14th August.The Telugu States rights of Coolie were bought by Asian Sunil, Suresh Babu, and Dil Raju for ₹50 Cr (including GST), while the Telugu States rights of War 2 were acquired by Naga Vamsi for ₹95 Cr (including GST).

War 2 is a Bollywood-style film, whereas Coolie is a star-studded combination film. Despite NTR’s presence in War 2, audiences in Telugu States have shown more interest in Coolie, which is clearly reflected in the pre bookings and collections. From opening day onwards, excluding early morning special shows, Coolie has maintained higher occupancy in Telugu States.

While War 2 is an outright failure with recovery stuck at just 40%, even reaching 50% looks like an impossible task. On the other hand, Coolie had a good weekend with more than 70% recovery, but the film now needs strong weekday collections to achieve breakeven — otherwise, it too may end up in losses.

NTR took a daring step with selecting War 2 as his Bollywood debut film. Fans were happy with this decision of their favorite actor, but a few sections of the trade/audiences were doubtful of its result. Finally, the film is now out in theaters, and Telugu audiences rejected War 2.

From the beginning, there was a doubt about whether Telugu audiences could resonate with the Spy series theme, and it may not work big. But due to belief in NTR’s stardom and story selection, Naga Vamsi bought the movie rights for 82 Cr for Telugu states. 

With GST, the break-even value goes around 95 Cr, and the movie collected 37.5 Cr share in Telugu states in its first weekend, which includes GST and the Hindi language as well. The film is likely to close under 45 Cr, and it is set for a massive 50% loss for buyers

Not only in the Telugu states but also in Karnataka, the Telugu version did not do well. In the USA the Telugu version even falls under 1 million, which is shocking. In other overseas territories also the numbers are very negligible

The total worldwide collections of the Telugu version may not even cross 50 Cr in the full run either, which says how badly Telugu audiences rejected NTR and Hrithik Roshan’s War 2.

Suriya’s next theatrical release is Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji. The film was supposed to be released this Diwali, but there was no official confirmation on the date. The latest news is that Suriya’s Karuppu is set to clash with Vijay’s Jana Nayagan at Pongal 2026.

The teaser of Karuppu was released recently, but the release date was not announced even though shooting is completed because non-theatrical deals are still pending.

Will Suriya’s Karuppu clash with Vijay’s Jana Nayagan at Pongal 2026?

The makers were planning to arrive on Diwali, but now the news started that they also consider a Pongal 2026 release plan. If the film releases for Diwali, then it will get a good number of screens in both Telugu and Tamil and is likely to be the number one choice for audiences as well.

But if it plans for Pongal, then definitely it will be a big risky move, as Karuppu is not carrying much buzz for now due to Suriya’s recent setbacks, and RJ Balaji does not have a big brand. 

Vijay’s Jana Nayagan and Siva Karthikeyan’s Parasakthi are arriving for Pongal 2026. Those two films are definitely bigger projects than the Suriya film, and his film will not get many screens. 

If we come to Telugu there are already films like Raja Saab, Anil Ravipudi-Chiranjeevi’s film, Anaganaga Oka Raju are set to be released alongside the Telugu dubbed versions of Jana Nayagan and Parasakthi

So, if Suriya releases Karuppu in competition with Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, even the Telugu version of his film will get very lesser screens

It’s better for the Suriya film to release on Diwali to get the festival advantage and a big screen count as well.

Yash Raj Films’ War 2 featured a big step, as it had two stars, Hrithik Roshan from the North and NTR from the South. This step was said to be calculated to expand the span of the YRF Spy Universe. However, War 2 shuts down the YRF Male Spy Universe.

The first four films of the YRF Spy Universe worked brilliantly, and all films emerged as super blockbusters. But Salman Khan’s Tiger 3’s ordinary result made it clear that the people are exhausted and are not showing much interest in the template spy series.

Also, it was reported that the big film in the series, Tiger vs. Pathaan, was shelved after the lukewarm response for the third part of Tiger. 

Tiger 3 and War Kill the Spirit of YRF Spy Universe

But at the time of Tiger 3’s release, only War 2 was on sets, and makers expected it would revive the Spy series. War’s sequel was released recently and opened with poor numbers and WOM. 

Even though it includes the one of biggest South Indian star, NTR, at current trend, the closing likely to be under Tiger 3

It means War 2’s result made the YRF’s male spy universe’s future weak. Certainly, the stars might not show interest in continuing this, and Yash Raj Films started a female Spy universe with a movie called ‘Alpha.’ 

Starring Alia Bhatt, Sharvari Wagh, and Bobby Deol in crucial roles, Alpha is set to be released this December, and we need to see how it goes. If this film does not work, then it’s the end of the entire spy universe.

Recently, Hyderabad movie goers received a good news of PVR Cinemas bringing the PXL format to hyderabad. Now, its the turn of Chenani movie fans to experience something exciting as Chennai gets its first EPIQ Screen.

Rakki Cinemas is all set to open their 4th Venue this October 2025 at OMR with 6 world-class screens, including Chennai’s FIRST EPIQ Screen.

This news brought a superb response by the Tamil Movie lovers, as they always seek to experience movies on big screen. 

Qube Cinema introduced the Premium Large Format idea known as Epiq. Epiq employs immersive audio and Barco high contrast RGB laser projection on a 1.89 aspect ratio screen. The 4K-resolution content for Epiq will be expertly graded for high contrast projection.  

Recently, Hyderabad also got its first EPIQ Screen as Raviteja and Asian Group’s ART Cinemas introduced it. Now it is the turn of Chennai audiences to enjoy the movie watching experience in EPIQ Screen.
