OTT – Mukesh Ambani’s Jio cinema strikes a massive deal

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Viacom18 has struck a massive multiyear deal with Warner Bros Discovery Inc. to feature popular Hollywood content, including HBO shows such as Succession and Game of Thrones, on their Jio Cinema streaming platform. The deal would see Warner Bros and its HBO content become available on Reliance’s Jio Cinema app, said news agency Reuters, quoting two sources with direct knowledge.

While the final details of the deal have not come to the fore yet, this marks a major development as fans will again get access to popular movies and shows such as Succession, Game of Thrones, the Lord of the Rings, and the Harry Potter series, according to a joint statement by the companies.

“The strategic partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery is a big milestone in our journey to offer the best of Hollywood content to our elite consumers. We believe that Warner Bros. Discovery sets the global standards for premium content and this partnership allows us to create the best and the most comprehensive destination for our users,” Ferzad Palia, head – SVOD & International Business, Viacom18, said.

Recently, Viacom18 finalized the proposed merger involving Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), Bodhi Tree Systems and the American media conglomerate Paramount Global. As a result of this merger, Jio Cinema’s integration into Viacom18 has also been completed.

Jio Cinema is actively pursuing a large share of the Indian OTT market. In addition to licensed content, the platform is also expanding original content. Jio Cinema plans to release as many as 100 movies and shows, produced at a cost of INR 2,000 Cr, over the next 18-24.

The platform has already managed to win over customers by broadcasting the Indian Premier League (IPL) for free. JioCinema stated that he saw 5 Cr new downloads of apps during the opening weekend of the cricket tournament. The OTT platform said it clocked over 147 Cr video views during the first weekend itself and attracted 10 Cr new viewers.
