Adivi Sesh’s action drama Major is finally infront of audience after months of wait. Major is a biopic of Late Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and it explores the life and origins of Major Sandeep. Right from the release of the first look, the film was successful in creating massive interest and with technically brilliant visuals and slick action episodes in teaser and trailer, the film created a great first impression. Does Major actually pack the punch that it promised? Lets find out.

Story: Based on the life of martyr Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Major celebrates the heroics of the army officer’s life, not only depicting his death at the 26/11 Mumbai attacks but also tracing his journey and embracing the spirit with which he lived. Adivi Sesh in the titular role and Prakash Raj and Revathy as his parents form the backbone of this story that explores some unknown facets of the Major Sandeep’s life.

Performances: Adivi Sesh as Major Sandeep is a classic case of perfect casting. He has given a career best performance and does 100% justice to his role. Be it action sequences or emotional scenes, Sesh performs with ease and has definitely announced his arrival as a dependable performer. Only the teenage portions look slightly out of place but they are well compensated by the other elements of the film. Prakash Raj is the soul of the movie and his dialogues will stay in viewers minds even when they walk out of the theatre. Revathy’s terrific portrayal as a mother who has lost her son is on the point and together the trio form a great on screen family. Saiee Manjarekar as Major Sandeep’s wife has pretty limited scope and makers could have taken better care of her portions. Shobhita Dhulipalla is fine in whatever limited screenspace she is provided as a hostage at Taj Hotel.

Analysis: Despite being just above 2 hours in runtime, Major takes some time to get going and is slow to start with. However, once Major Sandeep’s character arc starts to move forward, you are in for a ride. While Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s ultimate sacrifice is a known tale to many, the movie is much more than his career in the Army. It perfectly captures inspiration behind his decision to join the Indian Army, his ambitions, and his coming of age story. Technically, the movie is brilliant and special mention must go to Sricharan Pakala for his terrific RR. Vamsi Patchipulusu’s camerawork immerses us into the world of Major and is another highlight of the film.

Plus Points:

  • Adivi Sesh’s performance
  • Screenplay
  • Technically brilliant
  • Perfect blend of action and emotions

Minus Points:

  • Slowish first half
  • Certain scenes needed better research

Verdict: Major as a movie never gets preachy and tells us the story as it its. It is not just a story of a decorated Army officer but also a touching tale of a family who sacrifised their son for the nation. Sashi Kiran Tikka has ensured the flow of the movie was quite organic and it captured the true essence of who Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was. Major is a must watch film even if you’re not a fan of action genre as it is much more than an Army film.
