Jailer 2 has turned things around on day one. After a quiet pre-release campaign, the Rajinikanth sequel has opened to unanimously positive reviews, and the box office is already responding. Collections and occupancies are climbing show by show across all areas, and the film now has a real chance of becoming the biggest grosser in Kollywood history.
The Quiet Campaign Was a Plan
After watching the film, it is now clear why the promotions felt low-key. The team played it safe on purpose. Instead of revealing the big moments in the songs and trailer, they kept many surprises hidden for the theatre.
That decision is now paying off. Audiences walked in with moderate expectations and came out pleasantly surprised, which is exactly how the first Jailer worked in 2023.
Fantastic First Half, Decent Second Half
The early verdict is consistent: a fantastic first half and a decent second half. The first half has drawn the biggest praise from audiences, with the surprises and Rajinikanth’s moments working strongly in theatres. The second half holds the film together well, keeping the overall talk positive.
The Box Office Bonanza Begins
The impact is already visible in the numbers. Collections and occupancies are increasing with every show across all areas, a clear sign that word of mouth is spreading fast. Evening and night shows are filling up as the positive talk reaches more audiences.
The Perfect Run Ahead
Jailer 2 could not have asked for a better window. The opening week runs straight into the Dasara festival holidays, followed by the second weekend. With families heading to theatres during the festival, the film is expected to post big numbers right through to the end of its second weekend.
The Industry Hit Race
This is where things get exciting. Shankar’s 2.0, starring Rajinikanth, is currently the biggest grosser in Kollywood history with close to ₹700 Cr gross worldwide. The first Jailer came close to that mark with around ₹625 Cr gross.
With positive talk, a festival run and the sequel factor, Jailer 2 now has a strong chance of crossing 2.0 and becoming Kollywood’s new industry hit. Either way, the record would stay with Rajinikanth.
The One Big Miss: Hindi Multiplexes
The only negative is the Hindi version. Because Jailer 2 signed a four-week OTT window, national chains like PVR INOX and Cinepolis are not screening the Hindi version. The film is playing only in single screens across the Hindi belt.
The occupancy in those single screens shows there is real interest in the Hindi market, and with multiplexes, the film could have added a big chunk from Hindi. Even without that, Jailer 2 is well placed to emerge as the industry hit.
Jailer 2 is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, with Rajinikanth returning as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music.
