Kantara is a massive hit in Kannada and a bigger hit in Telugu. In Telugu, the actor or actress aren’t known, the trailer wasn’t so popular yet through strong word of mouth it’s Telugu version got whooping 32.5 crores share. This show Telugu audiences’ love for novel concepts and openness for other cultures on silver screen.
This folk thriller is still running great in Telugu states, getting better collections than straight Telugu movies. The film has got more than 12.5 crore share in Telangana and around 15 crores in Andhra Pradesh. Together in Telugu states, the dub Telugu version could get 28 crores so far.
Telugu Kantara could get 4.5 crores overall in rest of India and overseas. Hence, the total share Telugu Kantara has collected until now is 32.5 crores. These numbers are sensational and unforeseen for a movie that started without any buzz.
The movie is written and directed by the leading actor Rishab Shetty. The movie modestly opened with no big promotions, or grand scale events involving superstars. It proves the power of strong word of mouth and interesting content.
The movie blends rooted culture with entertainment formula. Many also found similarities with Rangasthalam, but the overall judgement on the movie is fantastic.
Post Dussehra is considered as dull phase in Telugu movie market, even the biggest stars won’t dare to release their movie. However, numerous movies like Sardar, Prince, Ori Devuda, Urvashivo Rakshasivo etc got released, but except Sardar other films were nowhere near compared to what Kantara has achieved.
The only movie that is giving competition to Kantara is another thriller, Yashoda. This shows that audience are longing for exciting theatrical experience and not the ones that can be seen in OTT without much difference.
We hope the moviemakers understand the phenomenon of Kantara and observe the patterns. Women and children encouraging the movie is a testament of it being a universal hit.
