After months of legal battles and censorship hurdles, the film is set to end one of Tamil cinema’s longest recent delays.
The makers officially announced the confirmed date today, bringing closure to fans who have been waiting since the film’s original January 9, 2026 Pongal slot was postponed due to unforeseen challenges.
New Release Date Ends Six-Month Wait
Originally scheduled for Pongal 2026, Jana Nayagan faced an unprecedented series of setbacks including legal issues, censorship challenges, and piracy concerns. The prolonged delay even led to distribution deal withdrawals earlier this year, with major partners stepping back amid the uncertainty.
The film’s political content required additional scrutiny from censorship authorities. The Revising Committee and Election Commission both reviewed the movie, particularly given its release timing around Tamil Nadu’s April 2026 state elections.
‘A’ Certificate Clears Path for Release
The final breakthrough came when the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) recently awarded Jana Nayagan an ‘A’ certificate. With certification secured and legal hurdles cleared, the makers swiftly locked the July 23 release date.
