Vijay’s final film Jana Nayagan has been declared a box office failure despite achieving collections that far exceeded initial expectations after a troubled release. The political drama has recorded a 12-day all-India tracked gross of ₹195.2 Cr, with actual collections estimated at around ₹211 Cr.

Worldwide Total₹300 Cr

With approximately ₹89 Cr in overseas gross, Jana Nayagan has joined the ₹300 Cr club at the box office, continuing Vijay's remarkable ₹300 Cr streak. The film is now chasing Karuppu (₹320 Cr) to become Kollywood’s highest-grossing film of 2026.

Why Jana Nayagan Failed Commercially

Putting all factors aside, Jana Nayagan is commercially a box office failure. Considering its reported budget and initial theatrical business, the film needed to collect at least ₹450 Cr+ worldwide gross to emerge as a success. However, after 12 days, its worldwide gross stands at around ₹300 Cr and is expected to close below ₹350 Cr, falling significantly short of the breakeven target.

What Could Have Been

Industry analysts suggest that had there been no postponements or pre-release challenges and with the same content, Vijay’s massive stardom could have helped the film achieve its breakeven target. The first week collections of ₹254 Cr worldwide demonstrated strong opening momentum. Even with all these setbacks, the film is still on track to gross over ₹325 Cr, and under normal circumstances, it could have easily earned at least 35% more, potentially reaching the ₹450 Cr mark needed for commercial success.
