Sundeep Kishan and Neha Shetty starrer Gully Rowdy finally hit the screens today. The film has been promoted by the makers as an out-and-out commercial comedy entertainer with a good dose of action. With an ensemble cast of Rajendra Prasad, Posani Krishna Murali, and Vennela Kishore, the film and the trailers looked promising. Is it able to live up to its promise? Let’s check out

Story: Vasu played by Sundeep Kishan is the titular Gully Rowdy. The story follows his journey where he was raised in a rowdy family and is now confronted with the biggest challenge of his life in the form of antagonist Raghu Naik (Bobby Simha). Can Vasu solve the troubles of Venkata Rao (Rajendra Prasad) whose land is illegally occupied? What methods does Vasu use to settle this issue forms the plot?

Performance: A formulaic movie generally doesn’t offer much to the lead in terms of performances and Sundeep Kishan is no different. He has all the usual tasks to do like fight the goons, dance to songs, and romance the heroine and he does a fine job. There’s nothing much special about him here. Neha Shetty barely manages some presence and like many commercial movies, the actress’ presence makes no difference to the movie. Bobby Simha plays a familiar role of a menacing police officer with ill intentions and is aptly cast but with no scope for performance. It is Rajendra Prasad who is the best of the lot. He lights up the mood with his performance and one-liners and is dependable as ever in comedy as well as emotional scenes. Vennela Kishore is underutilized and his character could have been written better.

Analysis: The movie doesn’t take itself seriously and is meant for a light watch and the director keeps the proceedings that way. Gully Rowdy follows an outdated format where the action and proceedings of the story are driven through comedy. The comedy blocks don’t work in their entirety and are funny in bits. The rushed writing and age-old plot points make the film look silly at times.

Minus Points:

Cliched writing

Slow narration in the first half

Undercooked charecters

Verdict: Gully Rowdy is not a film that will challenge you and neither did the makers ever claim so. It was promoted as a commercial entertainer and stays that way. However, the cliched story and formulaic writing give you a sense of deja vu every now and then. The film has got an open ground with no major release this week and it could have been a great success had the makers focussed on the story more than the promotions.
