Empuraan is the biggest budget film from Malayalam Cinema. The film stars Mohanlal in the lead role and directed by Prithiviraj Sukumaran, it is a sequel to the superhit movie Lucifer (2019). The film made waves with its advance bookings and produced a humongous hype. Let’s find out whether it lives up to the hype in our review.
Story:
Jathin Ramdas (Tovino Thomas) stuns Kerala politics by forming a new party with the hardline right-wing ASA, led by Baba Bajrangi/Balraj Patel. Stephen Nedumpally, or Lucifer, is the hope for saving God’s Own Country. The story follows Stephen’s efforts to save the state.
Performances:
Mohanlal’s talent remains unchallenged in this movie. He just walks in a cool, slow motion and says powerful lines here and there. Tovino Thomas does well, but the way his character wraps up is a letdown. Prithviraj, both director and actor, has a backstory and engages in action at the climax. He’s fine. Abhimanyu Singh is usual. Indrajit Sukumaran performed well, while Kishore and the other cast members were sufficient in their brief roles.
Analysis:
L2 Empuraan picks up from the first part’s conclusion. The screenplay allocates time for world-building and character introduction. Despite the dull moments, some parts shine, like Mohanlal’s introduction and the interval episode. The latter half starts off well but soon slips away.
The villain’s character and scenes feel simplistic and uninspiring. The film feels like an extended climax with constant tension but lacks a satisfying conclusion. Prioritizing style fails when the writing is subpar. The film does not capture audience attention, resulting in disappointment
Positives:
- Rich Visuals
- Initial Sequence
- First 20 Minutes of the Second Half
Negatives:
- Dull Taking
- Weak Handling of Characters/Subplots
- Inconsistent Screenplay
Empuraan Movie Review and Verdict:
Mohanlal’s Empuraan is a disappointing sequel. The film has a grand presentation, huge cast and a few good moments that will enthrall fans. However, it fails to engage thoroughly becuase of dull feel and inadequate narration.
