Vijay Sethupathi has opened up about his rare cameo appearance in Jailer 2, revealing why he broke his self-imposed no-cameo rule for one person: Superstar Rajinikanth.
The actor, who was last seen in Gandhi Talkies, will make a special appearance in the highly anticipated sequel directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. The film marks a reunion between Vijay Sethupathi and Rajinikanth after their memorable collaboration in Petta (2019).
Why Vijay Sethupathi Stopped Doing Cameos
“I’ve stopped doing cameos,” Vijay Sethupathi said in a recent interview, adding, “I did only one recently in Jailer 2. That was just so I could see Rajini sir.”
The reasoning behind his no-cameo rule is purely commercial. When he appears in brief roles in other actors’ films, it affects the business of his own releases. “If I do a cameo in his film, people won’t even notice me. But if I do it in other films, it affects them,” Sethupathi explained.
The Rajinikanth Exception
Vijay Sethupathi‘s willingness to make an exception for Rajinikanth highlights the deep respect he holds for the Superstar. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the actor confirmed, “I have done a cameo in Jailer 2 because I love Rajinikanth sir. To be with him, I get to learn a lot.”
From Villain to Cameo: Vijay Sethupathi’s Career Shift
Vijay Sethupathi previously played a supporting role in Rajinikanth‘s Petta, which was released in 2019. He also gained widespread recognition for his villain roles in Master (2021), Vikram (2022), and Jawan (2023). After this successful streak, he announced that he would only do films as a lead and would not appear in cameos or villain roles.
Jailer 2 is scheduled to be released on October 15, 2026.
