Yash’s Toxic was panned by both critics and audiences. Despite a thunderous opening at the box office, the Geethu Mohandas directorial eventually struggled to sustain momentum and emerged as a major commercial disappointment. The film’s underwhelming theatrical run has now become a talking point in trade circles, with its performance being cited as an example of how dramatically a highly anticipated project can fall short of expectations at the ticket window.
Massive Deals Prior To Release
Considering the enormous buzz surrounding the project, an American streaming platform had reportedly offered around ₹150 crore for the digital rights across all languages. However, Yash, who also produced the film under his banner Monster Mind Creations, is said to have turned down the offer, seemingly expecting a more lucrative deal after the film’s theatrical release. Given the scale of the project and the expectations surrounding it, the decision was considered a significant gamble.
Everything Came Crashing Down
However, Toxic reportedly ended its theatrical run with a worldwide gross of around ₹300 crore, against a reported breakeven target of approximately ₹800 crore. The massive gap between the recovery target and theatrical revenue reportedly resulted in substantial losses for the makers. To make matters worse, sections of the audience were extremely critical of the film, with some even comparing it unfavourably to Ram Gopal Varma’s Aag (2007), which has long been regarded as a major box-office disappointment.
With the theatrical performance falling well short of expectations, the reported value of the film’s OTT rights also took a significant hit. From the earlier ₹150 crore offer, the digital valuation reportedly dropped to around ₹30 crore, leaving the makers with limited options. The film has now found a streaming home with ZEE5, where Toxic is scheduled to premiere on September 25, 2026. The action drama also stars Kiara Advani, Rukmini Vasanth, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi and Tara Sutaria.
