It’s official. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has ordered that newly released Tamil films can be screened up to six times a day, starting as early as 6 AM, in all theatres across the state.
The government announced the decision in an official press release today.
What the Order Says
According to the government, all theatres in Tamil Nadu can now screen newly released Tamil films up to six times a day for one week from the day of release.
These shows can run from 6:00 AM until 2:30 AM the next morning.
Theatres can also run six shows a day on local festival days, public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Tamil Nadu’s New Show Rules: Key Points
- Applies to: Newly released Tamil films
- Shows per day: Up to 6
- First week: 6 shows daily from the release date
- Also allowed: Local festivals, public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays
- Show timings: 6:00 AM to 2:30 AM (next day)
From 5 Shows to 6
The new order is a step up from the current rules. Under the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, theatres in the state usually screen four shows a day.
After the present government took office, newly released Tamil films were allowed five shows a day for the first seven days, as well as on local festivals, public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Now, that limit goes up to six shows a day, with screenings allowed from 6 AM. The government will amend the regulation rules to bring in the change.
The Film Industry’s Request
The decision came after a request from three industry bodies: the Tamil Film Active Producers Association, the Tamil Film Producers Council, and the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association.
They had made several requests to the government, the main one being permission for six shows a day from 6 AM to 2:30 AM in the first week of a new Tamil film’s release. The Chief Minister approved it after considering the industry’s requests.
No Word on Ticket Price Hike
The exhibitors had also asked for a ticket price hike of up to ₹250. The government’s order doesn’t mention ticket prices, so rates stay at the regular levels for now.
Scene Among the First to Benefit
The timing works well for this week’s Diwali releases. Suriya’s Scene releases on November 6, and it will be one of the first big Tamil films to benefit from the new rule. The film’s makers had held back bookings in Tamil Nadu while waiting for the decision, so bookings are expected to open soon.
A Big Boost for Tamil Films
Six shows a day, starting from 6 AM, means more screenings in a film’s crucial first week and on holidays. That should help big Tamil films post bigger opening numbers in the state, and give fans the early morning shows they’ve been asking for.
