The re-release trend has become quite popular in the Telugu states, starting with ‘Super Star’ Mahesh Babu’s Pokiri (2006). The trend continued to yield some highly profitable ventures and, of course, some failures. Now, our neighbouring film fraternity, Tamil cinema, has taken over this trend.
Ghilli (2004), an official remake of Mahesh Babu’s Okkadu (2003), was a blockbuster in Tamil and, over the years, gained a cult following among fans and audiences in general. ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay’s fans have decided to celebrate this classic once again on the big screens with a grand re-release.
The film had extraordinary advance bookings and expectedly registered excellent opening figures; Ghilli’s first-day gross is estimated to be around INR 8 crore, which is a record for any re-release in the country. Vijay has once again underlined his undeniable superstardom.
