Moviegoers in Tamil Nadu may soon have to pay more for a trip to the theatre. The state’s exhibitors association has asked the Tamil Nadu government to allow ticket prices to go up to ₹250.
Why Theatre Owners Want the Hike
The exhibitors say running theatres has become much more expensive in recent years. They have pointed to two main reasons.
Rising maintenance costs
Higher electricity bills
According to them, the current ticket prices are no longer enough to cover these growing costs, and a hike is needed to keep theatres running.
Tamil Nadu’s Ticket Price Cap
Tamil Nadu is one of the states where the government sets a limit on how much theatres can charge for tickets. Unlike some states, theatres here can’t freely raise prices, even for big films.
That’s why the exhibitors have had to go to the government with their request.
Ticket Prices Across the South
Ticket pricing has been a hot topic across South India. In Andhra Pradesh, big films often get special permission for price hikes during their opening days. Venkatesh’s Aadarsha Kutumbam, for example, was allowed an extra ₹75 in multiplexes and ₹50 in single screens for its first 10 days. Telangana, meanwhile, kept regular prices for the same film.
Tamil Nadu has so far kept a tighter grip on ticket rates.
What It Means for Audiences
If the government approves the request, a movie outing will get noticeably costlier, especially for families buying several tickets at once.
For theatre owners, though, the hike could help them stay afloat, upgrade facilities and keep screens running, particularly single screens in smaller towns that struggle the most with rising costs.
All Eyes on the Government
The decision now rests with Chief Minister Vijay’s government. With Vijay himself coming from the film industry, the exhibitors will be hoping for a sympathetic hearing. But the government will also have to weigh the impact on ordinary moviegoers.
