There was a point in time in Tollywood when stars ruled the box office. Whether it was ANR, NTR, or Superstar Krishna in the early years to Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, and Venkatesh later on, stars have always had an impact on the box office.
But as content and the medium of content consumption have evolved, the tastes of the audiences have changed too. A star tag is no longer enough to pull crowds to the theatres. There is no doubt that a star will pull in crowds initially but the film will succeed only if the content is good. Ram Charan’s success with Rangastham and failure with Vinaya Vidheya Rama is a prime example of that.
Stars like Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, Nani, Naga Chaitanya, Nithin, Ram, and Vijay Deverakonda have recently failed to reach their expectations. Some of the movies have not even managed to post minimum numbers. With a few underperforming with positive talk also.
But films like Major, Sita Ramam, Karthikeya 2, and the now recent blockbuster Kantara are proof that content will always work at the box office. Telugu audiences have evolved and expect nothing short of brilliance. This is a great sign and hopefully, our stars take this into account in their upcoming movies.
