The recent re-release of Rajinikanth’s Padayappa received a solid response from Tamil Cinema fans, and it also helped theater owners with decent footfalls, as there were no new films at that time. However, Padayappa failed to surpass Ghilli in re-release collections.
Rereleases usually perform well only on their opening day, and very few films manage to sustain collections for several days. Crossing a double-digit gross in re-releases itself is a big achievement. Vijay’s Ghilli set a sensational record by collecting more than ₹30 crore worldwide in its rerelease, a feat matched in South India only by Baahubali: The Beginning.
Superstar Rajinikanth’s Padayappa was rereleased on his birthday, December 12, and the film collected around ₹15 crore worldwide in its first week. These numbers are considered blockbuster-level for a rerelease. However, the film is still short of beating Ghilli’s record in Kollywood.
Industry sources expect Padayappa to finish its full run with around ₹20 crore gross, making it one of the most successful re-releases in Tamil cinema history, even if it doesn’t surpass Ghilli.
