Nayanthara’s much-anticipated fantasy comedy-drama Mookuthi Amman 2 has had a disastrous start at the box office, delivering one of the weakest openings for a film of its scale and budget. Despite carrying the legacy of the successful 2020 hit Mookuthi Amman, the sequel has failed to generate the expected excitement among audiences on its opening day.
With a reported budget of over ₹100 crore, the film now faces an uphill battle to recover from its poor theatrical start.
Disappointing Day 1 Collections
According to early box office estimates, Mookuthi Amman 2 managed to collect just over ₹2 crore gross in India on its opening day. The film’s overseas performance has also been underwhelming, pushing the worldwide opening day total to less than ₹3 crore gross.
These figures are far below industry expectations for a film headlined by Nayanthara and backed by a large-scale production budget.
Huge Weekend Growth Now Essential
Following its disappointing opening day, the film urgently requires a massive jump in collections from Day 2 onwards to remain competitive at the box office.
Trade analysts believe that strong word-of-mouth and festive holiday footfalls are now crucial if the film hopes to improve its theatrical prospects over the coming days.
Without significant growth, the road to profitability could become increasingly difficult.
Competition from Scene and Ramayana Adds Pressure
The box office scenario has become even more challenging due to the strong performance of competing releases.
Suriya’s Scene has opened to impressive numbers and continues to attract audiences across key markets. Meanwhile, Ramayana is dominating the festive season with strong collections and exceptional advance bookings.
With both films enjoying higher audience interest, Mookuthi Amman 2 is finding it difficult to secure momentum at the box office, particularly outside Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu Remains the Film’s Only Hope
At this stage, a respectable performance in markets beyond Tamil Nadu appears highly unlikely. The film’s best chance lies in strengthening its hold within its home state during the extended Diwali holiday period.
A substantial increase in footfalls over the weekend will be necessary if the film hopes to reverse the current trend and stay in the race.
Can the Sequel Repeat the Success of the Original?
Mookuthi Amman 2 arrives as a spiritual successor to the 2020 blockbuster Mookuthi Amman, which was written and directed by RJ Balaji, released directly on OTT and became a major success among family audiences.
The sequel is directed by Sundar C, with Venkat Raghavan serving as co-writer. Nayanthara reprises her role as the titular goddess and leads a star-studded ensemble featuring Urvashi, Yogi Babu, Regina Cassandra, Duniya Vijay, Khushbu Sundar, and Sneha.
The film’s music has been composed by Hiphop Tamizha.
Early Verdict
The opening day numbers have come as a major shock for a film mounted on such a grand scale. While the Diwali weekend could provide some relief, Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman 2 needs extraordinary growth in the coming days to recover from its disastrous opening and reignite interest among moviegoers.
For now, the sequel finds itself in a difficult position as stronger competitors continue to dominate the box office conversation.
