Hyderabad’s movie lovers have waited more than a decade for this. IMAX is finally coming back to the city, and it’s coming to one of its most loved theatres. The iconic Sudarshan 70MM at RTC X Roads is being rebuilt as a modern multiplex under the AMB banner, with a licensed IMAX with Laser screen.
Pictures from the site are doing the rounds online. The building now carries AMB Victory branding along with IMAX with Laser and 4DX signage, and an AMB Classic board stands outside with a “Coming Soon” tag.
What’s Coming
- IMAX with Laser screen
- 4DX screen
- Multiplex under the AMB Victory / AMB Classic banner
- Location: RTC X Roads, Hyderabad
The IMAX screen is expected to be one of the biggest in India. Reports say it will use the 1.90:1 IMAX format and not the taller 1.43:1 format some fans were hoping for. Even so, laser projection means sharper images, brighter colours and much stronger sound than a regular screen.
The Big Names Behind It
The project is led by Asian Cinemas, run by producer and exhibitor Suniel Narang. Asian already runs AMB Cinemas in Gachibowli with Mahesh Babu, one of the most popular multiplexes in the country.
For this project, the Victory tag points to a partnership with Victory Venkatesh and the Suresh Productions family, with Rana Daggubati also linked to it. Asian Cinemas’ executive director Jyesth Narang confirmed earlier this year that IMAX is returning to Hyderabad “after more than a decade.”
Why Hyderabad Missed IMAX
Hyderabad was one of the first Indian cities to get IMAX, when Prasads IMAX opened in 2003. It soon became a landmark for movie fans. But the IMAX format there was discontinued in 2014, and since then the city has had no licensed IMAX screen.
For a city that produces some of India’s biggest films, from Baahubali to Kalki 2898 AD and Pushpa 2, that gap has always been a sore point. Fans often travelled to Bengaluru or Chennai to watch big films in true IMAX.
RTC X Roads Gets a Makeover
RTC X Roads is the heart of Telugu cinema culture in Hyderabad. Sudarshan 70MM has hosted first-day celebrations for many big Tollywood releases over the years. Turning it into a premium multiplex keeps that legacy alive while bringing world-class formats to the area.
Varanasi in IMAX?
The timing is interesting. Mahesh Babu and SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi is reportedly being shot for IMAX presentation. Many expect the new screen to be ready in time for fans to watch the film in IMAX right at RTC X Roads.
Opening Date
An official opening date is yet to be announced. Reports suggest the multiplex could open before the end of 2026.
