Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan, the biggest hit of Malayalam cinema, has entered the digital field. The film was released in theaters in March and opened to mixed reviews. The film scored good numbers at the box office, but not at the expected level. The crucial test begins for Empuraan as it arrives on OTT.
Lucifer was a big hit at the box office in Malayalam, and it emerged as the 2nd biggest grosser for Mollywood. After its OTT arrival, the film became bigger and reached many audiences. Even in Telugu, it was remade as Godfather with Chiranjeevi, but most of the people opined that Lucifer is good compared to Godfather, as there are many changes in the Telugu version.
Empuraan fails to work in other languages
The huge response for Lucifer helped Empuraan massively, which was evident during the advance bookings and openings. But the film opened with below-par WOM and reviews, and because of such a response, it failed to register good numbers in other languages.
But in Malayalam, the sequel to Lucifer hype works well for Empuraan, and it created all-time records for first-week collections. After the 1st week, the mixed response started to affect the film, and it did not do much from the 2nd weekend.
Empuraan needs to work massively on OTT
Now the crucial test begins for Mohanlal’s Empuraan as it arrives on OTT. The movie is available for streaming on Hotstar in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada. The response is crucial for L2E, as it will have another part to come.
So, to create buzz on the third part, Empuraan needs to work big on OTT, and in case it fails to impress the OTT viewers, the next part will not see the big buzz even for Malayali audiences. The Hindi version of the film will stream 4 weeks from now, as it has an 8-week theatrical window.
