Dhanush’s latest Periodic action drama, Captain Miller, was released on Pongal and became a good hit at the box office. Two weeks after its original release, the film has been released in the Telugu states. Captain Miller turns out to be a sincere but imperfect take.

Story: The film revolves around Agnishwar/Captain Miller (Dhanush) and his struggle against the oppression imposed by the upper caste people in the village, along with facing the British. The story primarily focuses on the circumstances that led to a reward being placed on his head and how he confronts the enemies and withstands the battle.

Performances: Dhanush portrays the intense role with great finesse, effortlessly shouldering the film’s weight. His performance strikes the perfect balance, meeting the requirements of the character without going overboard. Elango Kumaravel was effective, while Shiva Rajkumar and Sundeep Kishan were good in crucial cameos. Priyanka Arul Mohan, Nivedita Satish, John Kukken, Jayaprakash, and others were appropriate. The actors who portrayed the British roles in the film executed their parts effectively.

Captain Miller First Half Review:

The opening of the film effectively establishes the atmosphere, depicting the oppression in the village, the insults, and a devastating attack on freedom fighters by Indian soldiers under the command of British officers. Though nothing new in the proceedings, some sequences bring out the emotions well. The back-and-forth narration shows the film chapter-wise and the interval sequence works well with a superb action episode.

Captain Miller Second Half Review:

The latter half attempts to spike up the emotions, but the repetitive feel and flat narration hinder the impact of most of the proceedings. The pain of villagers and their bonding with Dhanush could have been explored better. However, the last thirty minutes, filled with mad maxx-like gunfire, successfully provided some high moments. Because of the final moments, the film raises the anticipation levels and ends with a lead to the second part.

Positives:

  • Dhanush’s Performance
  • Few Dialogues/Scenes
  • Action Episodes
  • Background Score

Negatives:

  • Dull Narration
  • Lack of Strong Emotions
  • Repetitive plot/setup

Captain Movie Review and Verdict:

Captain Miller is a sincere but imperfect take. Dhanush’s intense performance, GV Prakash’s background music, action episodes, and a few powerful moments work for the film, whereas the dull and flat taking at times and repetitiveness in scenes work against the director’s intention.
