Prashanth Varma’s superhero flick HanuMan is the year’s biggest blockbuster so far, with a gross of over 250 crore INR. This is a remarkable achievement considering that it was medium-budgeted and not a star-studded film. According to trade experts, the team’s promotional activities before release, particularly opting for paid premieres, played a key role in the film’s success. Intitally planned with just nineteen shows, the team ended up screening a total of 345 shows to meet the demand. The rave reviews it achieved from premiers paved the way for a historic success at the box office post-release.
It seems that the Suhas-starrer Ambajipeta Marriage Band is trying to replicate this approach. Having the release date locked on February 2, 2024, the makers chose to go for paid premieres a day before release. Helmed by debutant Dushyanth Katikaneni, the film is bankrolled by GA2 and Mahayana Motion Pictures. The promotional content so far, including the songs and trailer, has been well received by the audience, and the team looks extremely confident with the product in hand.
Actor Suhas has been on the rise lately. After playing supporting roles in films like Majli, he received a big breakthrough with the period drama Colour Photo (2020). His last theatrical release, Writer Padmabhushan (2023), was also a commercial success. One has to wait and see how AMB turns out, both during the premiere and eventually after release. It should be noted that opting for paid premiers is a double-edged sword. While a successful one is proven to enhance the opening numbers, on the flip side, an unsuccessful one will result in a massive cost failure. Hanuman and Shakuntalam are the best examples of these scenarios, respectively.
