The Alpha box office run has concluded with disappointing results for Yash Raj Films (YRF). The first female-led installment in the Spy Universe ended its theatrical run with an India net collection of around ₹55 crore, marking the lowest total for any film in the franchise and becoming the first to finish with only a double-digit net collection.
Spy Universe Sees Decline Across Recent Releases
The Spy Universe, once known for delivering massive blockbusters, has seen a clear decline across its last three releases. Salman Khan‘s Tiger 3 managed only a decent performance at the box office, while Hrithik Roshan and NTR‘s War 2 ended up as a major disappointment. Now, Alpha has turned out to be an outright rejection by audiences, with the film unable to generate sufficient interest despite featuring two leading actresses in action roles.
The franchise, which began with Ek Tha Tiger in 2012 and expanded through multiple successful installments including Tiger Zinda Hai, War, and Pathaan, had built a reputation for high-octane action and star-powered entertainment. However, the recent string of underperformances has raised questions about audience fatigue with the spy thriller format.
Franchise Plans Shelved After Alpha’s Performance
YRF had planned several films and multiple crossover events to expand the Spy Universe, including the much-anticipated Tiger vs Pathaan project. However, following the audience’s rejection of the recent installments, the studio has been forced to shelve the franchise for now. The weak box office run for Alpha has left the future of planned sequels and spin-offs uncertain.
