Adipurush Movie Review – A fresh take on the epic, might not impress everyone!

Adipurush records impressive TRP ratings

Movie: Adipurush
Rating: 2.75/5
Cast: Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Singh, Deva Dutta Nage
Director: Om raut
Produced By: Bhushan Kumar, Krishna Kumar
Release Date: 16th June 2023

Story: We know that the film, Adipurush is a cinematic take on the eternal saga of Ramayan. What happens when Janaki (Kriti Sanon) is kidnapped by Lankeshwara/Ravan (Saif Ali Khan) during her vanavas with Raghava (Prabhas) and how she is rescued is the main story of the movie.

Analysis: Ever since the release of Adipurush’s teaser, everyone was skeptical about how the director Om Raut has handled the task of making a movie based on the epic Ramayan. Though the new trailers and songs had a better appeal, still not so many were sure of the film’s content being on the mark. Director Om Raut tried his best to reach the expectations of the audiences, and he was successful only in parts.

Om Raut tried to give a different visual image to the age-old characters. He also changed a few incidents from the actual history. The first half of Adipurush is less about visual fantasy and focuses on the emotions of key characters. The introduction of Raghav, and the bonding between him and Janaki were well established. The abduction of Janaki and subsequent entry of Bajrang, the effective interval episode, make it an engaging affair.

However, the second half falls flat for the most of the parts. Because it is filled entirely by the war, it gives an exhaustive feel because of the repetitive action sequences which only work here and there. Only the final duel between Raghav and Lankesh had a bit of impact. The other renowned historic events were presented in an ordinary manner. For example, the Sanjeevani episode, and the Vibhishan episode, which have a strong image in the other versions of Ramayan were very flatly presented in the film.

Performances: Prabhas looked good in the title role except for a few shots and his performance was fine. Kriti Sanon made her presence felt, but she was missing for the most of the part in the second half. Saif Ali Khan was good, but his character looked one dimensional. Sunny Singh was just okay, while Deva Dutta Nage was perfect.

Plus Points:

  • First Half
  • Bajrang/Hanuman Character Scenes
  • Songs and Background Score

Minus Points:

  • Exhausting Second Half
  • Shallow Depiction of Lanka World
  • Shabby Visual Effects

Verdict:

Adipurush just falls short of the expectations because of the ineffective handling of the second half. The fairly engaging first half and a few action sequences, background score, work well for the movie. You can watch the movie for the visual experience but with fewer expectations.
