Summer Holidays, directed by debutant Srikar Nayan G and produced by Dheeraj Mogilineni under Dheeraj Mogilineni Entertainments, is a comedy drama about the friendship of two children. The posters and promos hinted at a heartwarming film. In this Summer Holidays review, let’s check whether it meets those expectations.
Summer Holidays Story
RV (Arun Dev) is a young boy studying in Hyderabad. His father (Harshavardhan) constantly pressures him about academic ranks and marks, insisting that he must secure the first rank. But RV has a deep passion for cricket, and he is too fearful of his father to share it.
As summer holidays arrive, RV travels with his mother (Vasuki) to his grandmother’s (Jayasudha) village, Thotavari Palem. There, he meets KV (Rohan Roy). RV and KV become friends, and the story explores how their bond grows and how they help each other.
Performances
Arun Dev R.V., a National Award-winning child actor for his debut film 35 – Chinna Katha Kaadhu, fits perfectly into his role. He is also believable in the emotional scenes. Rohan Roy performs with great energy and impresses equally in emotional sequences.
Harshavardhan, Vasuki and Rajeev Kanakala perform very well in crucial roles. Veteran actor Jayasudha gets an important role and does a superb job with her natural acting.
Analysis
Srikar Nayan G makes his directorial debut with Summer Holidays. He sincerely tries to capture the essence of one of the most nostalgic moments of childhood: spending the summer in a grandmother’s village.
He weaves in familiar nostalgic elements, such as a grandmother feeding the children, kids wandering through mango orchards, playing gully cricket, forging friendships and swimming in the village pond.
Both halves have fun and sentiment scenes, and many of them feel enjoyable and relatable, with a nice mix of emotions. Some sequences feel sluggish and a couple of parts are overdramatic. Otherwise, the film is engaging, including the heartfelt climax.
Positives
- Performances
- Relatable and fun moments
- Heartwarming moments
- Music
Negatives
- A few oversimplified scenes
- A bit of predictable touch here and there
Summer Holidays Review: Verdict
Summer Holidays is a beautiful and heartwarming movie. Its strongest aspect is the natural portrayal of childhood nostalgia, emotions and feel-good moments. The performances by Arun and Rohan feel genuine, complemented by Sinjith Yerramalli’s music.
