Sreenu Vaitla is in dire need of a hit and has teamed up with Gopichand for Viswam who also has delivered a series of flops. The trailer of the film failed to create an impact and looked rather similar to Vaitla’s works over the years. However, with Dasara holidays going on, the makers are hoping to draw the audience to theatres through this action comedy. Will they succeed? Let’s find out.
Story:
Gopi (Gopichand) returns to Hyderabad from Italy for Sameera (Kavya Thapar). However, a series of dramatic events reveal that Gopi is actually Viswam. Why did Viswam assume the identity of Gopi? How does he manage to rescue a young girl named Darshana from terrorists? What is the connection between Viswam and Darshana? And what unexpected turns does Viswam’s life take? This is what the story follows.
Performances:
Gopichand takes on a familiar, easy-going role that he handles effortlessly. There’s nothing new or challenging about it, as he has played similar characters multiple times before. He looks sharp and fit, which adds to the appeal of the action sequences. Kavya Thapar, on the other hand, is given a typical, glamorous role that doesn’t require much beyond looking good, which she manages well. However, she struggles with delivering basic facial expressions. The rest of the cast including the likes of Naresh and Sunil and decent. However, poor writing lets down these seasoned performers.
Movie Analysis:
While Sreenu Vaitla has crafted Viswam’s character and scenes well, the overall execution falls short, particularly in the second half, where the audience would be able to guess the twists from miles away. Viswam is marred by cliches and formulaic writing which are its biggest drawbacks. The mind game between the hero and the villain, as well as the hero’s flashback, are seriously underwritten and some more emphasis on these elements could have made the movie a slick action watch.
Most of the comedy scenes will test the audience’s patience especially because of Vaitla sticking to his usual formula, which has become extremely repetitive. A tighter screenplay in the second half and a stronger villain could have made a significant difference.

Verdict:
Viswam is a bucket full of predictability and any movie viewer worth his salt will be able to guess what’s coming next. Sreenu Vaitla needs to do some serious introspection and ensure he comes out of his bubble and does something fresh.
