The Tamil film Tourist Family, featuring M. Sasikumar in the lead role, hit big screens on May 1 and became a big blockbuster at the box office. The film arrived on OTT today and let us check why the film became such a big hit in our review.

Story:

Das (Sasikumar) and Vasanthi (Simran), along with their two boys, leave Sri Lanka for Tamil Nadu as illegal immigrants and attempt to start a new life. They unwittingly rent a house in Chennai that is owned by the local police inspector, assisted by Prakash (Yogi Babu). The rest of the story is how this family’s relationship unfolds with the neighbors/community.

Performances:

Sasikumar captures Das’s resolute spirit and hidden kindness, whereas Simran perfectly shows the vulnerability along with strength in her role. The younger son, portrayed by Kamalesh, also contributes delightful scenes of true humor. Mithun Jai Shankar performs well as the elder son, while Yogi Babu, M.S. Bhaskar, Ramesh Thilak, and others are apt.

First-time director Abishan Jeevinth sets a narrative in Tourist Family that highlights resilience, the strength of community, and the fundamental goodness that emerges in times of hardship. The basic story might look simple, but the way he handled the emotions is appreciable. The beautiful mix of comedy and emotions is the best point of the movie.

The emotional moment of a character’s death in the first part and the poignant scene between the father and son in the latter part are particularly notable; the latter is certainly the finest segment of the film, as a long emotional part is followed by a hilarious end.

The film’s incorporation of genuine Sri Lankan Tamil dialect adds an important element of realism to the characters’ interactions. However, one might feel that the situations/conflicts in the film are handled too conveniently.

Positives:

  • Performances
  • Emotional Scenes/Dialogues
  • Natural Humor
  • Music

Negatives:

  • Convenient Scenes/Writing
  • Few Unnecessary Scenes

Tourist Family Movie Review and Verdict:

Tourist Family is a well-made emotional drama. The performances, especially Sasikumar’s, and the right mix of emotions and fun parts work well for the movie. It is definitely a heartwarming experience for OTT viewers.
