Actor Kamal Haasan’s statement about Kannada and Tamil languages’ similarity erupted in a huge controversy, and the film’s release was banned in Karnataka. Now, the Supreme Court orders the Karnataka government to allow the release of Thug Life.

The Supreme Court stated that it cannot allow mobs and vigilantes to take over the streets and said that any film that has a CBFC certificate must be released and the state has to ensure its screening.

Different Views must be allowed in democracy, says the Supreme Court – Thug Life Karnataka Ban Controversy

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court issued a notice regarding the ban on Kamal Haasan’s Tamil film Thug Life in Karnataka, condemning groups that threatened to prevent the film’s release due to controversial comments allegedly made by the actor.

The Supreme Court moved the plea submitted by the film’s producer from the Karnataka High Court to itself and requested the state government to provide its response. It raised concerns about the High Court’s involvement, particularly regarding suggestions that the actor should apologize to settle the matter.

The court also quoted past judgments, including the Bombay High Court verdict in the Mi Nathuram Boltoy play case and the Imran Pratapgarhi ruling, to support the argument that differing views must be allowed in a democracy.

Restating its role, the court said, “We are the custodians of the rule of law. That is what the Supreme Court is for.”
