In a year characterized by high-budget expectations, Thudarum, a modest Malayalam film, stole the show with an unexpected and historic box office success. While all eyes were on Mohanlal s Empuraan to make a splash, but his Thudarum quietly emerged as a hit, defying industry expectations and becoming a watershed moment for Mollywood and Indian cinema in general.
Thudarum, a small budget movie, achieved astounding figures, finishing its theatrical run with a staggering international gross collection of ₹232 crore. In Kerala, the movie grossed ₹119 crore and earned ₹50 crore in share, making it the first Malayalam film to reach both ₹100 crore and ₹50 crore domestically.
The film’s overseas performance was equally impressive, collecting $11 million (approximately ₹93.5 crore), making it the second Malayalam film after Empuraan to cross the $10 million mark internationally. The Rest of India (ROI) market also contributed a solid ₹19.5 crore.
With this massive success, Thudarum now stands as the third highest-grossing movie in Malayalam after Empuraan and Manjummel Boys, marking a new milestone in the rise of Malayalam cinema on the global stage.
