Theatres Express Concern Over Netflix–Warner Bros Deal

On Friday, movie lovers worldwide received big news as Netflix and Warner Bros Discovery revealed a deal for Netflix to acquire WBD’s film studio and streaming service, concluding a lengthy bidding war that included Paramount, Skydance, and Comcast competing for the assets.

Netflix is known for restricting its theater releases and the length of the number of its shows. It stated that it will adhere to ongoing WBD cinematic contracts lasting until 2029.

In contrast to traditional movie studios, the streaming giant always stands against the standard theatrical distribution, which is now raising concerns about potential significant shifts in an industry that continues to face challenges after the pandemic.

The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) expressed deep concern over the proposed deal of Warner Bros. by streaming platform Netflix. They argue that it will disrupt “a vibrant theatrical ecosystem,” as in the past, the platform has deprioritized theatrical releases, and it will be a threat to the exhibition business. However, since it is a global deal, this concern cannot lead to any action or change.
