The Tamil movie Thalaivan Thalaivii, featuring Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen, premiered last week in Tamil and got an excellent reception. Directed by Pandiraj, this family drama has been released in Telugu as Sir Madam today. Here’s our review of the film.

Story:

Aakasa Veeraiah (Vijay Sethupathi) runs a tiffin center (famous for parottas) with his family. He weds Rani, also called Maharani (Nithya Menen), and their marriage begins on a positive note. However, they soon start to argue over minor and strange issues. Their ongoing disputes ultimately result in a three-month separation and a divorce filing. A specific incident then intensifies the disturbance between the couple, and the rest of the film shows the causes for their endless arguments and how they deal with the issues.

Performances:

Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen play the lead roles in Sir Madam. They both drive the film with their performance and screen presence, and make the proceedings enjoyable. Yogi Babu provides the comic relief, while Deepa Shankar, Saravanan, and all the other actors who played the family members fit the roles very well.

Pandiraj directs Sir Madam (Thalaivan Thalaivii in Original), a comedy drama set in a rural backdrop that revolves around a newlywed couple and their families. The film’s entertainment value shines thanks to its lead pair, Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen. Their chemistry and mastery of their roles greatly enhance the film. They effectively depict a couple who are often torn between love and conflict.

While the film primarily leans towards humor, there is a pivotal moment in the latter half where tensions rise between the lead couple and their families. Near the climax of Sir Madam, Vijay Sethupathi gives a touching performance in an emotional scene that reflects the strain of being a responsible husband and son, feeling genuine rather than contrived.

The comedy works for most parts of the film. The highlight is that the humor arises naturally from the characters’ actions instead of any punch lines or forced side tracks.

The film’s non-linear structure adds a sense of novelty, yet many scenes focus on a single minor conflict. The screenplay presents similar arguments between the main couple, only varying slightly in tone, which creates a sense of repetition. Additionally, several overly loud moments could have been omitted.

Overall, Pandiraj delivers an engaging film, and it keeps one glued to the screen despite some flaws.

Positives:

  • Performances of Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen
  • Comedy
  • Emotional Moments Near The Climax

Negatives:

  • Loud Tone
  • Repetitive Parts
  • A Couple of Unnecessary Songs

Sir Madam Movie Review and Verdict:

Sir Madam is an enjoyable comedy drama that has Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen’s convincing performances and comedy parts alongside a few emotional beats. The film suffers from repetitive scenes and a loud tone, but it still makes for a one-time watch.
