Story:

An old man named Rajendran, feeling really guilty, admits to a crime he did 40 years ago and then takes his own life, sharing his confession on Facebook. A cop named Vivek, who has been suspended, is given the job of investigating this case. It leads him to discover some skeletal remains linked to a young woman named Rekha, who went missing during the filming of Mammootty’s movie Kathodu Kathoram back in 1985. Vivek tries to find out the truth and bring the killer to justice.

Performances:

Asif Ali does a good job in the character of Vivek. After Thalavan, he once again impresses with his portrayal of a police officer in a different setup. Anaswara Rajan shines and adds the required depth to the character/movie. Manoj K Jayan is good as the antagonist, while Indrans, Siddique, Zarin Shihab, Harisree Ashokan and others are also good.

Analysis:

Rekhachithram tells an imaginative tale about a murder connected to the events during the old Malayalam film Kathodu Kathoram’s shooting. It links the story to a nun who loves films and has gone missing, along with a cop who has been put on leave. It also has reference to the veteran Malayalam film personalities in the 80s like Sibi Malayalil, Bharathan, Jagadish, and John Paul.

The film starts on an intriguing note with the suicide scene and the investigation part also begins immediately. However, the process looks slow paced, and it moves with some ups and downs until the interval. But the second half works perfectly as the 1980 scenes along with the present-day moments, get linked correctly.

All the scenes that link the film industry and the journey of Rekha are fascinating. The scenes towards the end, where the little emotional touch between Rekha and Mammootty is shown, seems heartwarming.

Positives:

  • Asif Ali and Anaswara Rajan’s Performance
  • Second Half
  • Climax

Negatives:

  • A Few Slow-Paced Moments in the First Half
  • Unstable Feel here and there

Rekachithram Movie Review and Verdict:

Rekhachithram is a well-made crime thriller. The film benefits from solid performances from Asif Ali, and Anaswara Rajan, along with a neatly enacted screenplay for most of the parts. Though some slow paced and inconsistent moments derail the feel for a while, it emerges as an engaging movie.
