Pottel, directed by Sahit Mothkuri, had generated considerable buzz thanks to its intriguing trailer and promotions. The film, starring Yuva Chandra Krishna, Ananya Nagalla, Ajay, and Noel, released worldwide today.
Story:
Set in a rural Telangana village during the 1980s, Pottel revolves around Gangadar (Yuva Chandra Krishna), a simple shepherd who is tasked with taking care of a pottel that was supposed to be a offering to goddess Balamma, and his wife Bujjamma (Ananya Nagalla), who aspire to educate their daughter. Their dreams clash with the oppressive rule of the village head, Patel (Ajay), a man believed to be possessed by the goddess Balamma Thalli. The rest of the story follows Gangadar’s journey to educate his daughter, his fight with Patel and the connection between the sacred Pottel and his aspirations for her future.
Performances:
Yuva Chandra Krishna delivers a heartfelt performance in the lead role, pouring his heart and soul into the character. Ananya Nagalla also shines as Bujjamma, delivering a decent performance. Ajay’s portrayal of the Patel is solid, though his performance occasionally falters during the more intense scenes of divine possession. Supporting actors Tanasvi and Srikanth Iyengar contribute good performances in their respective roles.
Analysis:
While the film’s premise is intriguing, the execution falters in several areas. The screenplay, penned by director Sahith Mothkuri, suffers from uneven pacing and a lack of focus. The first half, with its strong character introductions and atmospheric setting, decent pre interval to interval sequences make it a good watch. But, director clearly looses track by taking a violent approach in the later half. Although Climax is decent, film fails leave an impact. The film’s runtime feels stretched at times and few good scenes in both halves are followed by poorly written filler clearly spoil the mood of the film.
The technical aspects of Pottel are commendable. Sekhar Chandra’s background score elevates the emotional impact of the film, while Monish’s cinematography captures the beauty of the rural setting. The production values are impressive, but the screenplay, unfortunately, fails to match the high standards set by the technical team.
Positives:
- Strong performances
- Engaging first half
- Impressive technical aspects
- Compelling story premise
Negatives:
- Weak screenplay
- Sluggish second half
- Unnecessary violence
- Excessive runtime
Verdict:
Pottel is a film with a promising premise, but its execution is uneven. While the first half offers a compelling narrative, the second half struggles to maintain its momentum. Despite its shortcomings, the film’s technical brilliance and strong performances make it a one time watchable.
