Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 2 hasn’t exactly been setting the box office on fire as many had believed. In fact, the Telugu and Hindi versions are failing at the box office while the Tamil version which was expected to strike gold has also been quite slow in terms of collections.
Box-office performance aside, there’s something that’s been bothering the Tamil audience as well. Tamil audience have criticized Mani Ratnam for the changes made to Kalki’s original novel and the half-hearted adaption of the novel. Slow screenplay and elimination of crucial incidents from the book aside, the casting has also come under scanner after the not-so-fiery box-office performance of Ponniyin Selvan 2.
Ponniyin Selvan novel is the pride of Tamil people and most were overjoyed when it was decided to make a movie on the novel as it will showcase the greatness of their history. Unfortunately, the film failed to attract the audience and now the sequel is underperforming even in Tamil territories. Overall considering the budgets, the film might be a profitable venture for the producer but the content wise it was a half-baked film for the Tamil audience
