Jana Sena MLC and actor-producer Konidela Naga Babu has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Executive Committee of AP-GREEN, the Andhra Pradesh government’s flagship environmental initiative. The appointment comes with Cabinet-rank status, giving Naga Babu a significant new responsibility in the state administration focused on greening and reforestation.
What is AP-GREEN?
AP-GREEN stands for the Andhra Pradesh Society for Greening and Reforestation for Ecological Enrichment. The programme is envisioned as a long-term environmental mission, with the state targeting substantial growth in its forest and tree cover. As Chairperson, Naga Babu will oversee initiatives aimed at increasing greenery, expanding forests, maintaining ecological balance and monitoring major green projects across Andhra Pradesh. The broader objective is to promote long-term environmental sustainability and expand forest cover throughout the state.
Cabinet Rank But Not a Minister
The Cabinet rank attached to the position does not make Naga Babu a Cabinet minister. The Environment and Forests portfolio itself is held by Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who is also Naga Babu’s brother. According to Deccan Chronicle, while Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had earlier announced that Naga Babu would be inducted into the Cabinet, the decision was later changed. Naga Babu is already serving as a member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council and as General Secretary of Jana Sena.
From Film Events to Environmental Leadership
Naga Babu was recently seen in the entertainment world at the success meet of his son Varun Tej’s Korean Kanakaraju, where he joined the celebrations alongside Varun and Chiranjeevi. The event made headlines after Chiranjeevi praised the film and director Merlapaka Gandhi for delivering a theatrical success. Varun Tej is also set to share screen space with Naga Babu for the first time in Bhari, a volleyball sports drama produced by Niharika Konidela and scheduled for Sankranti 2027. Now, with his appointment to a Cabinet-rank position, Naga Babu is set to take on a significantly different role, shifting his focus towards Andhra Pradesh’s environmental and reforestation agenda.
