Karthi and Arvind Swamy starrer Meiyazhagan was released to mostly positive reviews and superb premiere talks. The emotional drama, however, worked for only one section of audience and did not receive an overall unanimous positive talk.
Overall, Meiyazhagan collected closer to 40 Cr gross in its 1st week. In the overseas market, this film performed extremely well. The film did an okay business in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The Telugu states’ business has ben below par. The shocking part is that the film saw a disastrous performance in Kerala.
Usually, films of this genre perform quite well in Malayalam industry. Meiyazhagan is a slow drama that is high in emotions and storytelling. The film’s feel-good factor and camaraderie between Katrthi and Aravind Swamy were expected to draw the audience. Surprisingly, that did not happen and the film just collected 65L in 1st week and will close with less than Rs 1 crore collections in Kerala.
Incidentally, C. Prem Kumar’s previous film 96 did terrific business in Kerala with an 8 Cr gross. This figure was bigger than many star heroes’ record figures at that time. Unfortunately, this film has been rejected by the audience.
