Choosing the right release date is a crucial part of a film’s success, which is why most high-profile projects go for a holiday or festival weekend release. Having said that, there are a few time frames that are labelled as unsuccessful for feature films, and the month of February is one such thing. Despite Valentine’s Day, February has been a disastrous month for South Indian cinema. Till date, the only INR 100 crore grosser from the South is Ajith’s Valimai (2022), which had a worldwide release on February 24, 2022. Having said that, February is one such period that distributors do their best to avoid.
However, this jinx no longer holds true. Because two films of Malayalam cinema that hit screens within a span of two weeks have emerged as blockbusters at the box office,. Co-produced by Fahaad Fassil, the romantic comedy Premalu has performed exceptionally well since release; on the other hand, Manjummel Boys, a survival thriller film starring Soubin Shahir in the lead role, has emerged as a major commercial success. Manjummel Boys has collected more than 50Cr gross in first week and holding on sensational note. Premalu movie has already minted INR 73 crore worldwide and is slated for a release in Telugu on 8th March.
In their full run, both of these Mollywood flicks are expected to break through the INR 100 crore mark, thus breaking the February jinx of South Indian cinema.
