After Pariyerum Perumal and Karnan, director Mari Selvaraj developed a sort of cult fanbase for himself with just 2 films. It is very rare for directors to garner such kind of attention, a few that come to mind are Vetrimaaran, SS Rajamouli, Mani Ratnam, and so on but Mari Selvaraj did this with just 2 films.
So as expected, there was a lot of hype and expectations around his next movie Maamannan, which boasted a star cast of U. Stalin, Fahadh Faasil, Keerthy Suresh, and Vadivelu. Not only that, veteran actor Vadivelu, who we have so often seen in comedic roles only was going to portray a serious role. This further increased expectations.
The movie was released on June 29th and opened to mostly positive reviews from the audiences. As a result, the film became a huge blockbuster in Tamil, collecting more than 50 crores gross in Tamil Nadu alone. The response was terrific.
With the success of the Tamil version, the film’s Telugu rights were bought by Asian Multiplexes and Suresh Productions. The film was released in Telugu this week but it has not performed according to expectations. This is likely because movies like Baby and Maaveeran fared better because they were fresh releases.
The film failed to get rent even in some big theatres. This is proof that not every dubbed film will work in Telugu. The timing of the release is also very important. Nayakudu was released very late in comparison to its Tamil counterpart Maamannan, hence the poor response.
