Tollywood has a poor record when it comes to films standing up to their sequels success. Baahubali 2 is one major exception to this trend where the original was surpassed by the sequel. Nikhil’s Karthikeya 2 looks like it has all the ingredients to join this club where the sequel outperforms the original. The plot looks engaging and has been shot on a grander scale. However, it all comes down to the execution now. Can Karthikeya 2 manage to grab the audience’s fancy? Can Nikhil deliver that much-needed hit? let’s check out.

Story: Dr Karthikeya (Nikhil) is a rational man who believes in logical reasoning more than anything. Due to a twist of fate, he finds himself along with Swati ( Anupama Parameswaran) at the center of the grand scheme of things involving Lord Krishna’s ornaments. However, there is more to it than what meets the eye with the story unfolding into a great adventure with a dash of mythology.

Performances: Along with a solid storyline, Nikhil is the biggest strength of Karthikeya 2. He carries the movie well on his shoulders and has delivered a career-best performance with this one. Anupama Parameswaran has done justice to her role and her pairing with Nikhil looks fresh. Srinivas Reddy has a meaty role in this one and adds great value to the proceedings. Anupam Kher in his limited screen time is dependable as always.

Analysis: Mixing adventure with mythology is a genre that needs a lot of courage and efforts can go downhill if the execution falters. Chandoo Mondeti has done a good job at providing an engaging thriller and succeeds in keeping the audience guessing for the most part. However, the one major flaw of the film is that it is rushed in some parts and it would have been better if these plots were explored further. In certain places, the film might remind you of others from similar genres, and movie buffs who are into the adventure genre might find it predictable. Keeping that aside, there is plenty of novelty with the writing focussing on elements from Indian mythology with the history of Lord Krishna and Mathura being explored in engaging details like never before.

Plus Points:

  • Interesting Storyline
  • Nikhil’s performance
  • Tight screenplay
  • BGM

Minus Points:

  • Rushed sub-plots
  • Missing logics in parts
  • Some predictable scenes

Verdict: Karthikeya 2 has all that it takes to make a good weekend watch with family. The production values and visuals truly transfer you to the film’s world. With the help of a racy screenplay and solid BGM from Kaala Bhairava, Nikhil and Chandoo Mondeti have truly hit the ball out of the park.
