Before its release, Suriya’s Kanguva was one of the year’s most hyped and awaited Kollywood movies. The fantasy action film released to poor reviews and could not build any momentum over the first weekend. The film has faced massive losses in every territory and has emerged as the biggest Kollywood disaster of all time.
Kanguva’s overseas rights were sold at 40 Cr making it one of the highest deals ever. The film collected just 24 Cr gross with a share of approximately 10 Cr approx. This has led to a massive 30 Cr loss just from overseas. This is the biggest disaster for a South Indian film in the overseas market.
Other territories have a similar story. The buyers have faced 3/4 losses on their investments in almost all the regions and the worldwide closing gross is just 105 Cr. Before its release, Kanguva was expected to cross the 100 Cr mark on opening day or in 2 days. But it took 11 days to cross this mark.
The film’s breakeven was at 400 Cr gross but the recovery is just 25%. It needs to be seen Siva, Suriya, and the team emerge from this debacle.
