Finally, after years of wait, Nag Ashwin’s magnum opus Kalki 2898 AD is in front of the audience. Termed the most ambitious Indian project since the Baahubali franchise, Kalki 2898 AD has everything on paper from a superb starcast, grand scale, and visionary team to make it a blockbuster. But, does this on-paper potential get translated into real-time success? Let’s find out.
Story:
The story is set in the fictional world of Kashi (the last city of the world), Shambala, and Complex. Deepika Padukone (Sumathi) lives in the complex with other fertile women who are forced to be pregnant by Supreme Yashkin(Kamal). Sumathi escapes the complex and crosses paths with Ashwattama (Amitabh Bachchan). Meanwhile, Prabhas as Bhairava plays a bounty hunter and is tasked to bring back Sumathi. Sumathi makes her way to Shambala where it is believed that Kalki would be born. How Bhairava faces Ashwattama and whether he is successful in bringing back Sumathi forms the plot.
Performances:
It has been quite some time since the audience witnessed an effortless Prabhas just sailing smoothly on the screens. He just breezes through his character of Bhairava and as always is great in the action scenes. Amitabh Bachchan as Ashwathama is one of the most important parts of the movie and does complete justice to the character. Apart from the Prabhas-Amitabh duo, others including Kamal Haasan, Deepika, Shobana, Saswata Chaterjee, Rajendra Prasad, and Disha Patni all have done a fine job with nothing much to take home.
Positives:
- Visuals
- World building
- Mahabharata episodes
- Strong characterizations
Negatives:
- Slow narration
- Weak screenplay
- Forced comedy
Verdict:
All the cameos though not impactful are fun to watch. The visuals are mind blowing on the screen. The last 20 minutes and Mahabharata episodes are goosebumps worthy. On the flip side, and emotional quotient is low and the pace is slow with many unwanted episodes in both halves. Overall worth watching on a big screen for a grand visual experience!
