Kadhalikka Neramillai Movie Review: Genuine Attempt, but Underwhelming Output

Kadhalikka Neramillai Review

Movie: Kadhalikka Neramillai
Rating: 2.5/5
Cast: Nithya Menen, Ravi Mohan, TJ Bhanu, John Kokken, Lal, Yogi Babu, Vinay Rai, Mano, Vinodhini Vaidyanathan, and Lakshmi Ramakrishnan
Director: Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi
Produced by: Red Giant Movies
Streaming On: Netflix

Kadhalikka Neramillai stars Jayam Ravi (Ravi Mohan) and Nithya Menen, and the film started streaming on Netflix on February 11th in all the prominent languages. The film was made as a classy and breezy romantic entertainer released for this Sankranthi. Though it received decent word of mouth in the theatres, it didn’t perform well at the box office.

Story:

Based in Chennai, architect Shreya (Nithya Menen), learns about her partner’s infidelity shortly before the start of their wedding festivities. At the same time, Siddharth (Ravi Mohan) enjoys a laid-back lifestyle as a structural engineer and prefers to avoid the complications of marriage and parenthood. Due to a sequence of events, Shreya ends up pregnant through IVF and sperm donation, which aligns with Siddharth’s contributions made at the same time.

Performances:

Nithya Menen and Ravi Mohan both fit their roles well and gave impressive performances. While TJ Bhanu and John Kokken kept things orderly, Lal, Yogi Babu, and Mano made a noticeable impact. Although Vinay Rai starts off with a solid introduction, his character becomes irrelevant later on. Vinodhini Vaidyanathan and Lakshmi Ramakrishnan were suitable.

Analysis:

Kadhalikka Neramillai represents a sincere effort to create a contemporary love story. It includes all the beliefs and concepts that Gen Z adheres to. The storytelling seems inconsistent in the first half, but it aligns with the story and characters in the second half. The scenes leading up to the pre-climax and climax still disappoint in the second half.

One will look forward to further examination of the characters and their struggles if they are intriguing. Be it Shreya’s mention of PCOD as a factor in her wish to have a child soon, or the introduction of Sethuraman as a gay man who desires to have children. Even though incorporating these aspects into the narrative is a refreshing change, their references fail to add meaningful value to the story, rendering them pointless. At the midpoint of the film, Sethuraman’s character remains a mystery, and we are left wondering how Shreya managed her pregnancy with PCOD. Although the final moments held promise for enhancing the film, the conventional jealousy track before the climax and an abrupt ending diminished its impact. The film tries to support some daring decisions of youngsters/individuals, but at the end, it ends up taking conventional route.

Positives:

  • Performances
  • Few Pleasant Moments
  • AR Rahaman’s Music

Negatives:

  • Uneven Narration
  • Not exploring the crucial characters/issues properly
  • Mixing the routine formula at a few places

Kadhalikka Neramillai Movie Review and Verdict:

Kadhalikka Neramillai is a genuine attempt but produces an underwhelming output. Though Ravi Mohan and Nithya Menen perform well, and the music works well for the film along with some endearing moments, it ends up as a disappointing movie because of the uneven narration and not so strong emotional impact. It can be watched by the viewers who want to see a fresh take one romance.
