It is official that Irumudi is arriving on Netflix this Friday, following the regular 4-week theatrical window. The film is still performing well at the box office and maintaining good footfalls, leading some fans to feel that the makers should have postponed the digital release for a week or two.
The 4-week OTT window has been the norm for most South Indian films recently, though the industry had earlier adopted an 8-week rule in March 2026 to protect theatrical revenues.
Vishwanath & Sons Crash After Early OTT Drop
Suriya and Venky Atluri’s Vishwanath & Sons serves as a recent cautionary example. The film was collecting a decent ₹25 lakhs even on weekdays, but completely crashed on Thursday and Friday as it began streaming on OTT platforms.
Despite the online streaming, Vishwanath & Sons experienced a decent increase in collections yesterday with just 87 shows, suggesting the film might have earned approximately ₹30-50 lakhs per day this weekend. However, its overall performance was negatively impacted by the premature digital release.
Revenue Impact of Early Digital Windows
Both Irumudi and Vishwanath & Sons have lost theatrical revenue because of the compressed OTT window. While streaming platforms demand earlier access to capitalize on theatrical buzz, exhibitors and producers are increasingly concerned about the impact on box office collections.
The Irumudi OTT release on Netflix will test whether top-performing films can maintain momentum post-digital premiere, or if the pattern seen with Vishwanath & Sons will repeat.
