Ever since the title glimpse of Mahesh Babu and Rajamouli’s Varanasi was released, audiences have been wondering if an IMAX screen will open in Hyderabad before the film arrives in 2027.
Fans are excited because SS Rajamouli confirmed that the movie will be shot in IMAX (1.43:1), and they want to experience it in the format it was designed for.
Preetham Daniel, Vice President at IMAX Corp, responded to users on X who asked about an IMAX screen in Hyderabad. He said that efforts are being made to bring IMAX to the city.
Preetham also replied to Rajamouli’s post, mentioning that he has been trying to bring an IMAX theatre to Hyderabad since 2015 and will share updates once there is progress.
Prasads used to have an IMAX screen, but it was removed because the old 70mm system became outdated. Upgrading to IMAX’s latest digital and laser technology was too expensive, and local ticket prices couldn’t support that investment. As a result, they let the IMAX license expire.
A few months ago, Asian Suneil Narang also said that an IMAX screen is being planned. Later, he added that he is still working hard to make it possible.
With all these factors, opening an IMAX theatre in Hyderabad within the next 1.5 years will not be easy. It will require full commitment and a major financial investment to give audiences a top-quality experience.
Fans are hoping that Varanasi will be screened in IMAX somewhere in Hyderabad. If that doesn’t happen, Telugu audiences may have to watch it in regular cinema-scope formats, just like many other films.
Varanasi stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and others. The film is produced by KL Narayana and SS Karthikeya, with music by MM Keeravaani.
