DC Review: Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Debut Action Drama

Lokesh Kanagaraj, the director who delivered many blockbusters, makes his acting debut in DC, directed by Arun Matheswaran. Wamiqa Gabbi plays the female lead, and the film generated significant buzz among audiences with its intense trailer and Anirudh’s electrifying music. Here’s our complete DC review.

Story

The story follows a rustic group led by Devadas (Lokesh Kanagaraj) and his friends. They rise against an abusive system, and law enforcement brands them as dangerous extremists. The film is all about the group’s revenge against an injustice by the police, how Devadas is linked to Parvathy (Sanjana Krishnamoorthy), and the changes Chandra (Wamiqa Gabbi) brings into his life with her entry.

Performances

Lokesh Kanagaraj, playing a lead role for the first time, delivers a decent performance. He shows the intensity required in crucial scenes, and his screen presence is also good. Wamiqa Gabbi does a solid job and adds value to her character with her performance. Sanjana Krishnamoorthy makes her presence felt despite limited screen time, while the other supporting actors are apt.

Analysis

Director Arun Matheswaran picks up a revenge plot that goes through familiar tropes. There is nothing fresh in the proceedings, but the way characters are built is good. The first half starts on a strong note, establishing the intensity, and after that it goes into a bit of a random mode, with the love track working well, but the emotion not landing the way the director wanted.

Towards interval, the screenplay picks up with a solid and violent action episode, delivering the needed high impact. The second half has several action blocks that land very well, though the repetitive feel arrives here and there.

Towards the climax, the sentiment is blended well, along with the emotion between the lead pair, and the climax is also neatly executed.

Positives

  • Solid Action Sequences
  • Lokesh KanagarajWamiqa Gabbi Pair and Performance
  • A Few Intense Dialogues/Scenes
  • Anirudh’s Music

Negatives

  • A Few Stretched Scenes in The First Half
  • Repetitive Feel Partially in The Second Half

The film benefits from superb action blocks, supported by Anirudh’s electrifying score, and the lead pair, Lokesh Kanagaraj and Wamiqa Gabbi, also deliver a good impact.
