The much-hyped sequel, Jailer 2, is now out in theatres. Though the film suffered with low pre-release buzz, it gathered good advance sales and is all set to achieve the 3rd biggest opening of Tamil Cinema. Here’s our Jailer 2 review to find out whether Nelson Dileepkumar had surpassed expectations.
Story
The film starts right from the end of Jailer 1. The story is all about how Muthuvel Pandian (Rajinikanth) takes on a big criminal empire while making sure that his family is safe.
Performances
Rajinikanth once again mesmerizes with his charisma and screen presence, taking several scenes to the next level. His performance in a couple of emotional scenes is also good. SJ Suryah and Vidya Balan get a couple of good scenes, though they could have been used better. Ramya Krishnan and Mirnaa get a crucial emotional part and they are apt in it.
Suraj Venjaramoodu makes his presence felt, while Namo Narayana and Yogi Babu spread good laughs. Shivarajkumar and Mohanlal continue in special cameos from the first part along with Jackie Shroff, while Hrithik Roshan makes a blasting entry.
Analysis
Nelson Dileepkumar directs Jailer 2, and he cleverly uses the same template of the first part: an underdog emerging as a gangster-like figure after a point. The first half starts on a good note and impresses by mixing the breezy, fun touch with the hero elevations.
The hotel scene and the interval scene bring high energy, while the rest of the buildup and comedy make the first half of Jailer 2 an engaging ride. The second half has some moments which appear repetitive and could have been better.
But the graph rises with the birthday episode, the compromise scene, and the crucial emotional pre-climax moment work well, along with the cameos again at the climax. Nelson aces the game of understating the hero’s character till the threshold and making him powerful again.
Of course, the film would have been more effective had Nelson concentrated more on the family element, which would have added depth to the ending scene.
Positives
- Rajinikanth’s Screen Presence
- First Half Screenplay
- High Moments
- Anirudh’s Background Score
Negatives
- Weak Moments in the Second Half
- Family Emotion Angle Needed Better Execution
- Cameos Lack the Surprise Factor
- Songs
Jailer 2 Review and Verdict
Nelson and Rajinikanth deliver a satisfying sequel with Jailer 2. Though the film has some underwhelming moments in the second half, and the cameos miss the freshness or surprise factor, the film still engages for the most part with several high moments and humorous sequences.
