Nandamuri Kalyan Ram starrer Bimbisara is the second release of the day and just like Sita Ramam, it has also evoked quite a positive pre-release buzz. Bimbisara is a fantasy action film with grand action sequences and made on a big budget. Kalyan Ram has expressed great confidence in the film and there are reports of the film to be developed into a trilogy. But, does the film have enough punch in it to span a franchise? Let’s find out
Story: Set in 500 BC, Bimbisara (Kalyan Ram) is a cruel and power-hungry king who takes extreme measures to suppress any dissent in his kingdom. Due to a twist of fate, he has transported centuries ahead of his time to 2022. What he doesn’t know is that his past and future are already connected and there are elements waiting for him. How are these different time periods connected and what does Bimbisara do next is what the story is about
Performances: Kalyan Ram has given his career-best performance with Bimbisara. He plays the part of the cruel king quite convincingly. However, falters a little bit in convincing the audience as a mighty warrior. Apart from Kalyan Ram who also plays the role of Bimbisara’s twin brother, all other performances are ordinary and have nothing special to talk about. Catherine Tresa and Samyukhta Menon are just there to play typical love interests of the lead and add no value. The film entirely banks on Kalyan Ram and technical aspects
Analysis: Bimbisara is a superb plot on paper and has one of the most unique storylines from Tollywood in recent times. The visual effects are decent and MM Keeravani’s BGM is a big advantage to the film. Mallidi Vasisht has successfully managed to capture the audience’s interest. The director wastes no time in getting proceedings alive right from the word go. It’s another matter that the film fails to end on the same high as it began with. Bimbisara would have been more intriguing if the villain character was cast better and written with depth. The film is touted to be the costliest film of Kalyan Ram’s career and few VFX shots are truly enthralling.
Plus Points:
- Basic Premise
- Bimbisara Character
- Production Values and BGM
Minus Points:
- Heroines
- Villain character
- Climax
Verdict: Bimbisara certainly has all the ingredients of a successful box-office crowd puller and is already receiving positive feelers from the audience. If it continues for the next two days, we have a winner in our hand.
