Big Relief for Mythri Movies: Ilaiyaraaja Rights Settlement Completed

The issue between Mythri Movie Makers and Ilaiyaraaja has been resolved.

Leading producers Mythri Movies have officially settled their dispute with Ilaiyaraaja over the use of his classic songs (Good Bad Ugly and Dude) and credits. After a few days of conflicts, the issue has been resolved, much to the happiness of audiences as well.

Both parties informed the Madras High Court that they have reached a mutual compromise, under which the maestro Ilaiyaraaja will receive ₹50 lakhs from Mythri Movies along with due credits for the usage of his compositions.

Good Bad Ugly showcased three classic tunes from Ilaiyaraaja, but since they didn’t have his permission, it ended up in court.

Take a look at the songs of Ilaiyaraaja used in Good Bad Ugly

  • “Ilamai Idho Idho” from Sakalakala Vallavan (1982)
  • “En Jodi Manja Kuruvi” from Vikram (1986)
  • “Oththa Roova” (also known as “Otha Rupayum Tharen”) from Nattupura Pattu (1996)

Ilaiyaraaja’s legal action prompted the Madras High Court to issue an interim injunction, leading to the removal or muting of the songs in the film’s later digital and streaming versions, such as on Netflix. But now the issues are sorted out.

G. V. Prakash Kumar composed the original background music for the film.
