Tamil cinema superstar-turned-politician Vijay has created history in Tamil Nadu politics with a sensational debut in the 2026 Assembly Elections, surpassing even the legendary M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) in vote share. Contesting for the very first time through his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay has emerged as one of the biggest winners of the election and shocked the entire political landscape.
TVK has currently secured victory in 108 Assembly constituencies, placing the party in a strong position to stake claim for government formation. To form a simple majority in the 234-seat Assembly, the party needs 118 seats. Vijay has already written to the Tamil Nadu Governor, requesting an invitation to form the government and assuring that he will prove his majority within two weeks.
What makes this victory even more remarkable is the scale of Vijay’s debut performance when compared to legendary actor-politicians who entered politics before him.
Vijay Surpasses MGR in Vote Share
Among actor-politicians making their electoral debut, the legendary M. G. Ramachandran remains ahead in terms of seats won during his first election with AIADMK in 1977, securing 130 seats with a 30.4% vote share.
However, Vijay has now gone past MGR in overall vote percentage. TVK recorded a massive 34.92% vote share in its debut election itself, which is being seen as an extraordinary achievement in Tamil Nadu politics.
Debut Election Performances of Actor-Politicians
| Actor-Politician (Party, Year) | Vote Share | Seats Won |
|---|---|---|
| N. T. Rama Rao (TDP, 1983) | 46.3% | 201 |
| M. G. Ramachandran (AIADMK, 1977) | 30.4% | 130 |
| Vijay (TVK, 2026) | 34.92% | 108 |
| Chiranjeevi (PRP, 2009) | 16.32% | 18 |
| Vijayakanth (DMDK, 2006) | 8.4% | 1 |
| Pawan Kalyan (JSP, 2019) | 5.53% | 1 |
| Kamal Haasan (MNM, 2021) | 2.52% | 0 |
The numbers clearly show how massive Vijay’s political entry has been. Many senior stars entered politics with huge expectations, but very few managed to create such an immediate impact among the public.
A New Political Force in Tamil Nadu
For years, Tamil Nadu politics revolved around the Dravidian giants DMK and AIADMK. But Vijay’s rise has now changed the conversation completely. His campaign attracted huge crowds, strong youth support, and massive social media engagement throughout the state.
Political analysts believe Vijay’s clean image, strong fan base, and aggressive grassroots campaigning helped TVK convert cinema popularity into real electoral strength. The actor had announced his political entry back in 2023 and worked steadily to build organizational presence across Tamil Nadu.
With 108 seats already secured and talks of possible support from independents and smaller parties gaining momentum, all eyes are now on whether Vijay can successfully cross the majority mark and become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
One thing is certain—Vijay’s political debut is no longer just successful, it is historic.
