Nag Aswhin’s sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD is undoubtedly a massive money spinner. Though the figures released by the makers are exaggerated, this Prabhas-starrer is a sure-shot winner at the box office with an estimated gross of INR 1000 crore worldwide. But for a second, let’s put these figures aside and think about it: Is the film really that good? Can you place it next to the legendary Bahubali series? If you’re feeling skeptical while answering this question, you’re at the right place.
Thanks to the extensive promotions from the team, Kalki 2898 AD, the film carried enormous hype before release. It could be because of this that it could satisfy a big chunk of the audience entirely. While the film must be appreciated for its technical finesse and outstanding visual effects, the writing is below par and the narration is flat, without any buildup.
Even Nag Ashwin acknowledges during interaction with media that there were shortcomings and mistakes in the film some of which they already knew and some they didn’t expect.
Particularly in the first half, there’s hardly any high moment in the film. Additionally, the characters are poorly written, and the worldbuilding is unclear, to say the least. Although the film performed exceptionally well in urban centers, few of these shortcomings affected its reach to the masses. Admittedly, the second half was much better, and needless to say, the climax saved the day. All in all, Vyjayanthi Movies must be lauded for their ambitious approach to cinema; in terms of writing, screenplay, and direction, Kalki 2898 is underwhelming.
