After the success of Love Story and Bangarraju, Naga Chaitanya is hoping to score a hat-trick with Thank You. The response to the trailer and songs released so far has been quite cold and director Vikram K Kumar is hoping the film generates great word of mouth. Let’s see if the film has enough to help Naga Chaitanya continue his success streak.
Story: Thank You is a story of Abhiram (Naga Chaitanya) a businessman in the USA who after much hard work has finally found success in his life. Success, however, has changed him into a self-centered and egotistical person who cares pretty little about others. Certain incidents change his life and he decides to go back on a journey down memory lane to Thank the people who made him into what he is today.
Performances: Thank You solely rests on Naga Chaitanya’s shoulders and there is pretty little scope for anyone else in the film. Barring Rashi Khanna as Priya, everyone in the film are mere support elements of Abhiram’s life. Naga Chaitanya has done a good job of carrying the film and shows various shades of his character quite well. His performance will remind you of his other films like Premam and Majili which had similar themes and the actor seems to be getting quite comfortable with this genre. Rashi Khanna performs well in whatever limited scope she gets and supports Naga Chaitanya’s character well. Malvika Nair, Sai Sushanth Reddy and Avika Gor do a decent job as crucial milestones in Abhiram’s journey.
Analysis: We have seen several films with the concept of going ‘ a trip down memory lane’. The audience knows exactly what to expect from the film and that is the film’s biggest drawback. Vikram Kumar who is known for freshness in every film has given his weakest film here. Thank You is a mash-up of a lot of other similarly-themed films and the jarring screenplay doesn’t help the viewing experience either. Thank You fails to generate that feel-good emotion and has too many scenes seeming quite out of place. Better presentation especially in 2nd half and more prominence to Malvika Nair and Avika Gor angles would have helped the audience connect better to the journey of Abhiram.
Plus Points:
- Naga Chaitanya’s performance
- PC Sriram’s cinematography
- Runtime
Minus Points:
- Predictability
- 2nd half
- Music
- Characterizations of support cast
Verdict: Thank You is not your regular run-of-the-mill commercial cinema. At the same time, it’s not a content-backed film. It lies somewhere between the two hence it was extremely crucial to give the audience some moments to rejoice and connect. The lack of connection is one of the major drawbacks in what otherwise was a decent subject.
